Does Smoking Relieve Stress
Almost all smokers believe that smoking relieves them of stress. They point out that this is one of the main reasons why they find it very difficult to quit. By lighting up a cigarette they think that it will relieve them of the situations where they are in brought by stress. And by inhaling the smoke that contains nicotine, they believe it will relieve their irritability, it will give them some peace of mind and it will make them more relaxed.
If we are going to observe non-smokers, they too are confronted by the same situation that smokers are exposed in their day to day life. Yet these people who don’t smoke don’t need nicotine in order to cope up with stress. Stress has been part of life since we were born, no one was born a smoker so I think smokers can handle stress perfectly even before they started smoking.
Stress cannot be removed from life. It is a part of it and it what makes life more interesting and it is what makes man stronger and wiser. Stress is present to everyone, even when you’re asleep, sweet dreams and nightmares do happen. It doesn’t excuse anyone, whether you are a non-smoker, ex-smoker or a smoker, so it’s up to the individual on how he will cope constructively with the difficulties in life.
So if nicotine is not relieving stress then what’s it doing inside the body of the smoker? Well, first the smoker is addicted to nicotine so he needs it in his body on a consistent basis. Now what happens when the levels of nicotine goes down; stress comes in and he feels bad. In order to remove these bad feelings he has to light another cigarette. This is what smoking or nicotine has been relieving, the withdrawal symptoms brought by nicotine and stress alone.
Sooner or later, the smoker will decide to quit smoking for good. Be it because of health or financial reasons, there will come a time when he will decide to quit (well I guess not all of them). The smoker has to admit the truth that smoking is not really helping him to cope up with stress. Rather nicotine is making his life more prone to stress because of withdrawal symptoms. The sooner the smoker accepts this truth the easier he will be able to quit smoking successfully.
Commitment to quit is one of the key main ingredients that is needed in order to quit smoking for good. When you are deeply committed, you will do everything under your control to stop smoking. Accepting the truth is one of them; smoking never has helped you in relieving stress. Actually it made your situation worse by helping you become addict and dependent to one of the most addictive drug known in this planet. So make the commitment quit smoking today!
